　　星期六一大早，全体村民自发地来到村口，迎接远方归来的望海老乡。在迎接的人群中，乔海山、米沙子又和黄榆发生了激烈的口角。随着鼓乐声响，以唐经理为首的返乡探亲团终于荣归故里。　　唐经理在欢迎仪式现场发表了感人肺腑的讲话，他说：“当我们得知望海村要被迁移的消息，我们忽然间感觉到我们的根没了，我们的家没了，我们心里的挂念没了。一个人要是失去了自己出生的地方，他将永远是没有归宿的落叶。”　　由于连日的奔波操劳，黄榆终于再一次病倒了，金兰和天喜连忙把他送到省城的医院复查病情。　　望海村里，万年历老爷子、祝奶奶，还有大美丽等善良村民无不暗暗祷告神明，期盼着老天能再多给黄榆一段时间，好让他率领村民们进行的这一场轰轰烈烈的家乡保卫战能够取得最后的胜利。　　可与此同时，乔海山和米沙子等人却怀疑黄榆不但利用唐经理等人的捐款去省城旅游，而且更在村里的帐务上做了手脚，尤其乔海山更是敏锐地觉察到，前一阵上级发下来的救济款似乎有被黄榆暗中截留占用的嫌疑。　　黄榆放心不下望海村的一草一木，不待病情有起色就早早地赶了回来，在郁郁葱葱的黄榆林里，黄榆偶遇了一个人——在这里给自己过生日的保护区管理员春芽。感慨之余，黄榆也给春芽讲起了这黄榆树的来历。　　黄榆树要求的最少，但给予的最多。它脚下的土地是沙丘，几乎是十年十旱。但它依然丰茂。因为有了它，沙丘才不再流动，万物才得以生长，炎热才充满了荫凉。每年的春天，是它用第一片绿叶向人类、向生灵报告春天的信息，每年的秋天，它会穿上橙红或米黄的盛装和人们一同庆祝丰收。　　它就是东北的胡杨树，活着千年不死，死了千年不倒，倒了千年不烂。它千年不死，是它的顽强。它千年不倒，彰显的是它的风骨。千年不烂，是它完成一种追求。　　在听到黄榆树如此高贵的风格时，春芽仿佛也看到了黄榆个人的崇高品德。　　接到举报的陈乡长再一次来看望黄榆，建议他尽快把村里的帐目公开，同时黄榆也恳求上级领导能倾听望海村村民的呼声，尽快在望海村的去留问题上做出最后的决断。　　祝奶奶又接到了儿子从远方寄来的钱，望着邮递员远去的背影，祝奶奶禁不住老泪纵横……　　最近朱二自觉得和大美丽的关系越来越亲近，为了更加讨好大美丽，以博得她的另眼相看，朱二偷偷把黄榆截留占用救济款买草籽树苗的秘密告诉了大美丽。大美丽听完吓了一跳，立刻叮嘱朱二一定要看好自己的嘴。
